Smokies Collect 5-2 Win Over Twins
|
The Harlan Smokies faced a tough opponent in Elizabethton pitcher Declan Veilleux, but still scratched out a win at Pioneer Park by a final score of 5-2 in 17 innings. Veilleux went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs. Woody Brandon came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 3 innings. His record now stands at 2-0. At 17-24, Harlan is in 8th place in the Appalachian League West Division.
The decisive blow was delivered by William Baskin in the bottom of the 17th when he hit a 3-run home run off 22-year old left-handed pitcher Enrique Ruiz to win the game for Harlan. The home crowd went nuts.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Baskin told a Harlan Daily reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
