Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Miners
|
The Welch Miners took Burlington pitcher Edward Toma's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Brent Brown Ballpark. The final score had Welch getting past the Sock Puppets, 3-1. Toma went 6 innings and allowed 1 run, striking out 6. Welch reliever Reon Hughley picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Freeman Mendez absorbed the loss. Whitfield Daniels got credit for the save for Welch. It was his 1st of the year.
Welch used the clutch hitting of Ciprian Sánchez to capture the win. The shortstop drilled a 2-run double in the top of the eighth inning to give the Miners the lead, 3-1. For the game, Sánchez had 2 singles and 1 double in 3 at-bats.
"We didn't string enough hits together to win the game," said tight-lipped Burlington manager Jon Lopez. "Obviously."
The Miners now have a mark of 22-16.
