Fans watched the Portland Hops and the California Angels fight to the finish.

The Portland Hops had to overcome a fine effort from California pitcher Ralph Mayes to grab a narrow 3-2 win at Disney Stadium. Mayes went 6.1 innings and allowed 1 run. With the win, Portland goes to 12-24, while the Angels fall to 23-13.

There were several reasons the Hops beat the Angels, but one factor was Hiroshi Takase. In the top of the eighth, the Portland left fielder came to bat and hit a 2-run single. It staked his team to a 3-2 lead.

Takase told a Portland Daily News reporter that he was "very satisfied" with the win.
