Youngstown Takes Wild Card Series Game 1, Olmedo Stars
|
Their bats were silent and Youngstown had a rookie on the mound. No problem.
On a day when the Gremlins struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 22-year-old starter Alfredo Olmedo. The left-hander quieted the Hamilton Red Wings at Eastwood Field to help Youngstown take the 3-1 decision and seize a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Wild Card Series.
In the top of the ninth, Charlie Bunker stood in the box, looking for a pitch to hammer. The Red Wings were trailing 3-1, but had runners on 2nd and 3rd. That's when Luke Maher made a terrific pitch and Bunker struck out. Gone was the dream of a Hamilton comeback.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Eastwood Field in Youngstown.
