Toronto got a strong outing from Renny Leech as the Blue Jays defeated the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, at Wrigley Field. The winning pitcher was Leech, now 7-1. He tossed 7 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 7. Brent Brown was credited with the save for Toronto, his 6th of the season.

Toronto used the timely hitting of Ernie Brox to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Blue Jays on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We came out on the wrong end of this one," said Chicago skipper Phil Ross.

The first-place Blue Jays lifted their record to 49-15.
