Erwin Grabs WCS Opener, 5-3
|
The 20-year-old rookie on the mound turned out to be the least of the Bristol Pirates worries.
Giving a high-pressure playoff start to youngster Mark Gray seemed like a risky move for the Pirates, but it was one of the few things that went right at Ballpark of Edmonton today. Gray tossed 6 solid innings, but it was all for naught after Bristol dropped a 5-3 decision. With the win, Erwin took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 Wild Card Series.
Rich Mays had a productive at-bat for the Mountaineers with two out in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on 1st and 2nd, the third baseman hit a run-scoring single. The at-bat was important in the Erwin win.
"The competition leap this year was tough to adjust to and I feel like there has been another jump in the playoffs," said Mays, a rookie this season. "You're only playing the best now and everyone has time to rest and prepare for you."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ballpark of Edmonton in Erwin.
