San Diego designated hitter Calvin Pascoe pounded St. Louis Cardinals pitchers at Petco Park, but it was not enough to keep the Padres from falling, 6-3, in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series. Pascoe went 3-4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs, though he couldn't keep the Padres from slipping to a 1-0 deficit in the best-of-7 series.

St. Louis used a clutch at-bat from Ethan Stevens to capture the win. The catcher hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 4-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Stevens. "You've got to get results."
