The New York Yankees did just enough to sneak past the Portland Hops, 5-4, at Yankee Stadium. New York pitcher Roy McMahan, in particular, had a standout performance. The win puts New York at 40-33 this season.

New York center fielder Patrick Hill contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fourth. With two down, he hit a fastball to right field for a 2-run single. It was his 66th hit of the season and put the Yankees ahead, 3-0.

"I just kind of blacked out and executed my pitches," said McMahan.
