Ventura and Martinez duked it out and the Gulls came out victorious.

The Ventura Gulls knocked off the Martinez Clippers, 7-4, at Recreation Park. Raphael Pugh was a big reason Ventura won. The catcher was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Phil Benstead was the winner. He's now 3-2. The loser was 25-year old right-handed pitcher Collin Sheppeard.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the sixth, with the game tied, Chris Snyder was at the plate when Ventura scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Gulls to go in front, 5-4.

"It's always a heck of a lot easier to get to sleep after a win," Snyder told the Ventura Observer. "I know I'll rest easy tonight."

The 5th-place Gulls improved to 16-15.
