Mariners Score Late, Top Mudcats, 6-4
|
The Virginia Beach Mariners topped the Carolina Mudcats, 6-4, the lion's share of the credit going to first baseman Dillon Coffey. On the day, Coffey went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Mariners. Lloyd Cantu earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 3.2 innings. He upped his record to 1-0. Holden Wallace got credit for the save for Virginia Beach. It was his 9th of the year.
Had Coffey not come through in the top of the eighth, who knows how the game would've ended? But with two down, Coffey hit a run-scoring single. The Mariners took the lead, 5-4, and never looked back.
"I had some good swings out there," said Coffey.
The Mariners raised their record to 14-29.
