Cubs Nip River Bandits, 9-8
|
The South Bend Cubs defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits by the score of 9-8, with the biggest share of the credit going to third baseman Paul Craig. Craig was 2-3 with a home run, a triple, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for the Cubs on the day. The 7th-place Cubs bumped their record to 33-40.
The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Russ Rhodes came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Quad Cities pitcher Nathaniel Placensia, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting South Bend on top, 9-8.
"Every time you put a 'W' on the board is always good," said Craig.
