Blue Jays Down Mets, 5-2
|
Toronto picked up a win at Citi Field, toppling the New York Mets, 5-2. Pitcher Renny Leech was one of the reasons the Blue Jays triumphed. In 7 innings, Leech surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 9 and walking 1. He allowed 2 runs. Homer Covarrubias closed the game out for Toronto, earning his 6th save.
Toronto used the clutch hitting of Mendy Pérez to capture the win. The catcher drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Blue Jays the lead, 3-1. For the game, Pérez had 1 single and 1 double in 3 at-bats.
Pérez expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end."
The Blue Jays, now 13-3, have been on fire in the early going.
