Ironbirds Win Slugfest, 12-11
|
With second baseman Eric Jackson leading the charge, the Aberdeen Ironbirds defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters, 12-11, at Ripken Stadium. Jackson, who is tied for 3rd in the NYP in RBI with 22, was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. Marcos Estevez, now 1-0, was credited with the win in 1.1 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on 4 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 0. Picking up the save was 22-year old right-handed pitcher Carmelo Olea.
The Ironbirds got a big hit from catcher Dontrelle Arojo. In the bottom of the seventh, Arojo smacked a bases-clearing double off Vermont pitcher Byram Sanderson. It was his 3rd double of the season. Suddenly, the Ironbirds were ahead, 12-11.
"Baseball's a game where I feel like almost everything that happens is strange," said Arojo. "Maybe that's why it's such a great game."
The Ironbirds sit in 4th place in the New York-Penn League South Division with a record of 11-9.
