Black Bears Use Late Rally to Win 4th Straight
|
The 8-7 West Virginia win over Staten Island was due largely to James Shafer. The Black Bears third baseman went 2 for 5 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Shaun Jones, now 1-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2.1 innings. The third-place Black Bears improved to 10-6.
West Virginia used the clutch hitting of Eddie Johnston to capture the win. The right fielder drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Black Bears the lead, 8-7. For the game, Johnston had 1 single and 1 double in 5 at-bats.
"I like our mindset right now," said West Virginia manager Scott Meissner.
