Lake Monsters Trip Black Bears, 1-0
|
The skies opened up and the rain fell at Centennial Field.
The Vermont Lake Monsters topped the West Virginia Black Bears, 1-0, in New York-Penn League action at Centennial Field. The standout performance belonged to Vermont pitcher and Hunter, Ohio, native Mason Cullen. Cullen, now 3-3, was the winner. In 5 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 5, walking 0, and allowing no runs. John Whitt collected his 2nd save.
Avery Nielo was 1-3 for Vermont. The 21-year old center fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the third. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Yuniel De León. It was his 12th RBI of the season.
"Every play was important. Every out was important," said Lake Monsters manager Tristan Batista.
The third-place Lake Monsters go to 29-22.
