The New Westminster Cavalry besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Salem-Keizer second baseman Neal McGirt by beating the Volcanoes, 3-2, at Volcanoes Stadium. McGirt went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. New Westminster, at 12-11, holds down 6th place in the Northwest League North Division.

The Cavalry benefited from an error in the top of the fifth inning. New Westminster was leading 2-1 when Virgil Tennery hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put New Westminster in front, 3-1.

"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said New Westminster manager Lou Kajioka.
