League Punishes Pair for Fighting Tuesday, June 25th , 2052 Yesterday at Marlins Park Russ Hicks and Mickey Whitcomb got into each other's space and then into each other's face. They began to grapple and fell to the ground. That's when it boiled over into a full-fledged bench-clearing tussle between the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics. Reason finally prevailed as the umpires restored order. After much discussion, only the two major combatants were ejected from the game. Today the league office notified the ballclubs that Hicks will have to sit out 2 while Whitcomb would be given a 6-game suspension for their roles in the brawl. This year Hicks has socked 75 hits in 209 at-bats for a .359 average with 9 home runs. He is getting on base at a .417 pace and his totals also include 27 RBIs and 30 runs scored. This year Whitcomb has fanned 62 in 64.2 innings and collected a 1-3 record with a 3.34 ERA. |
