Stripers Earn Late Win
|
Starting pitcher Ethan Shirey was a major factor in the 3-2 Gwinnett Stripers triumph over the Birmingham Barons. Shirey picked up the win for Gwinnett, going 7.2 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0. Gwinnett sits at 6-7 in the early going.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Oliver Harris came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Birmingham pitcher Brad Richmond, he hit a 2-1 splitter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Gwinnett on top, 3-2.
Birmingham manager Steve Anderson said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
