Bears Dump Chiefs, 6-2
|
The Bears grabbed a win, 6-2, at Victory Field, overcoming a fine effort from Syracuse pitcher Burnum Skinner. Skinner went 5.1 innings and allowed 1 run. Yes, it was a win for Newark; but their 11-32 mark is nothing to crow about.
Newark used the timely hitting of Jim Hawthorne to capture the win. The third baseman socked a 3-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Bears ahead, 5-1. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a big one.
"I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Hawthorne.
