On Road, Newark Drops Birmingham, 4-0
|
Newark Bears starter Daunte Hobbs turned in a top-notch performance against the Birmingham Barons at Raley Field. The result was a win for the Bears, 4-0. In 5.1 innings, Hobbs surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 1. He allowed no runs. Herb Tucker, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 1st save.
With runs few and far between, the Bears had to seize their opportunities when they came. One of the most important chances for Newark came in the top of the fifth inning, when left fielder Adrián Saenz delivered a 2-run double. The double was hit off J.D. Williams and made the score 3-0, Bears. Saenz went 2-3 with a double and a walk. He drove in 2 runs.
"Daunte -- his tempo and rhythm were good," said Bears manager Jessie Moe. "He was the key to us winning."
The last-place Bears have a record of 13-36.
